Cowboys Rob Ryan thinks he tried to install too much defense, too quickly

Rob Ryan thinks he tried to install too much defense, too quickly

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 9, 2012, 3:01 PM EDT

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan blames himself for some of the struggles of the Dallas defense last season, saying that when he got to work after the lockout, he threw the whole defense at his team at once, instead of giving his players the time to slowly pick up the playbook.

Ryan, who was hired by the Cowboys last year, told Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that if he had it to do all over again, he’d just introduce basic concepts at first and expand as the season went on.

“When we look back at ourselves, reevaluate, I think I started too fast,” Ryan said. “I put in the accelerated program without English 101, which I always struggled with. You have to have a foundation. . . . It’s like getting a tutor. My kid gets a tutor, he gets 90s in math. He doesn’t? Forties. We need 90s or 100s.”

The Cowboys’ defense got better with the arrival of Ryan last season, and he’s confident that the defense will continue to improve with an offseason of installing the defense the way he wants.

“It just takes time to re-teach everything, get the fundamentals,” Ryan said. “We’re going to teach at a slower pace so we can actually learn. We tried to slow it down [in 2011], and it was a little tough for us. I got to look in the mirror, and that’s on me. I’m a better teacher than that. We come back to square one, and it’s gonna be great.”

The defence got scored on way too much last year. I like Rob taking the blame but it's not all his fault. I expect way more accountability by the players this season, give the offence a chance to win the game. It's hard to win when you're just trading TDs.

You are so not getting it dude, there is no clinical possible way Ryan can be blamed for a grievous error that you never made to begin with!!!

let me explain

If you sit on a committee or a board of a fortune 500 company, but aren't allowed a voice. You aren't responsible if the company goes belly up!!! In Dallas the coaches are scapegoats....b/c the mental case who sits at the head of his own company is to egotistical to see he is the cancer that is forcing the company in to the ground

So instead of firing him self (like he should) he fires the scapegoats then hires more scapegoats just so he can fire them like he did their predecessors

guess what....join reality. the OWNER can be as big of a nutcase as he chooses to be. IT IS HIS MONEY. When you start to learn how the real world works instead of the fantasy that your mind lives in, then you will be relevant here...until then your as big a nutcase and cancer as the cowboys owner is.

Sorry but i gotta back up my buddy Mrtxstar. we may not agree a lot, but at least he has rational thoughts on here, unlike you TC

Show me where I blamed Ryan for anything. If I "don't get it" then at least show me where I pointed a finger at Rob Ryan with blame. I'll go get a snickers to snack on while I wait.

I do "get it", that you got a bullet with the name "Jerrah" on it but stop pointing that gun at me.

Hey guys...I love it that you debate with intense vigor. You peeps are some of our most active members & are mucho appreciated. Do me a favor though. You're slipping a bit into personal insults. Let's not go there but instead "fire" at the opponent's position.

Look...You doods are old-school trash talkers like me. You can "catch" as well as you "throw". So, I ain't even concerned about you bothering each other. I don't even care if you rib each other pretty hard. I'd be a hipocrite to insist otherwise. I do it myself...with TJ, Chef K, Troy, Lemon et al. It's fun for us...we laugh about it behind the scenes. But I have to remind myself sometimes to walk the line carefully...cuz there are members & guests watching that are turned off &/or intimidated by such and hence do not participate in the topics. And you guys really ROCK topics

This is NOT a warning...just Da Janitor 'splainin thangs, including you in the philosophy and asking you to help us maintain our special, unique environment but yet still have fun including "poking" but not "decapitating".

So, keep 'cussin n DISScussin', find/walk that fine, tough line but PLEASE have fun.
