A woman was forced by a judge to wear a sign outside of the WalMart she stole from.

Do you think this is cruel or fair?

Just don't think it's right. It is one thing to punish someone for a crime, but it is quite another to try to humiliate someone. This should have been handled in court with a fine or jailtime, not a public display.

The only way I could see it if it's someone habitual, where they committed the same crime numerous times and it doesn't say any background. For the first time I don't think it's right either

Not only is it cruel, it's unusual.

The judge should be removed from his bench.

Nope not at all. with as many people who commit crimes over and over, maybe a little humiliation will do more than a few days in Jail.

I guess I'd need more context. If its a first time offense, yeah its over the top.

If its the 3rd or 4th or 5th time or something and the amount of what she stole was minor I wouldn't be entirely opposed to this (Not because what she stole is worthless, but because the judge would probably only be able to award nominal damages. So, instead of making her pay some small amount again and having her back in court in a few weeks/months, maybe the judge figures this would be a stronger message.

A half decent attorney wouldn't have allowed anything like that to happen.
