The Philadelphia 76ers say prized offseason acquisition Andrew Bynum will be out at least five more weeks and probably longer because of continuing complications with his right knee. It is the third time since September that the Sixers have pushed back Bynum's return date. Bynum had a fresh MRI and saw his personal knee specialist in New York last week. The Sixers now hope he will be cleared to return to basketball activities by Dec. 10. But the team said Bynum would then need an additional one to four weeks of training and conditioning, which means his anticipated Sixers debut may be on hold until January. The Sixers are off to a 4-2 start without Bynum and have been without Jason Richardson because of an ankle injury for the past five games. Richardson was the other player Philadelphia received in the Bynum trade. "We know the Sixers fans are eager to see Andrew Bynum play and shine," Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo said in a statement. "We also know no one is more eager to see Andrew play for the Sixers than Andrew himself. He fully realizes the key contribution he can make to the team. Hopefully, that day is coming soon." The "hopefully" part is telling. It has become clear that while the team has been publicly optimistic and patient, it simply is not sure when the franchise center will get into a game. The Sixers already have faced some criticism for trading away All-Star Andre Iguodala, young prospects Nikola Vucevic and Moe Harkless and a future first-round pick to get Bynum. The decision is further complicated because Bynum, who's had surgeries on both knees and just turned 25 years old, is in the final year of his contract. |

PHILADELPHIA -- Injured Philadelphia 76ers All-Star center Andrew Bynum said Friday he has suffered a "setback" in his return from a knee injury. Bynum, acquired by Philadelphia in a four-team trade before the season, has yet to play for the Sixers and spoke before a game against Utah. He has been recovering from a bone bruise on his right knee, and his return has been pushed back three times since the beginning of training camp. The Sixers were hoping Bynum would be cleared to return to basketball activities by Dec. 10. That date is now in question because of issues with his left knee. Bynum says he now has swelling and a bone bruise on both knees. "I had a little bit of a setback," Bynum said. "Just working through some issues with the right knee, I kind of have a mirror thing going on with the left knee. I don't know what's going on. The doctors are saying it's a weakened cartilage state, so we kind of wait, I guess. We can't do anything. I just have to wait for the cartilage to get strong." Bynum did say he targeted Dec. 10 as a possibility, with one to four weeks of basketball-related activity to follow, pushing his much-anticipated debut to anywhere from mid-to-late December to as late as mid-January. "It's the same exact spot (as the right knee) with the cartilage," Bynum said. "Just doing routine things and it started swelling up. No blunt-force injury or anything like that. It's the same timetable still." The Sixers entered Friday 4-4 without Bynum, including three straight losses at home. |

By Brian Windhorst and Chris Broussard | ESPN.com The Philadelphia 76ers fear All-Star center Andrew Bynum might have done additional damage to his knees while bowling, according to sources close to the situation. Multiple sources told ESPN on Saturday that Bynum suffered an unspecified injury this month while bowling. On Friday, Bynum revealed that -- on top of the issues with his right knee that could keep him sidelined until January -- he also had suffered a "setback" with his left knee. |

Bynum's bowling could cost him the season
08:06 AM ET 11.19 | Sixers center Andrew Bynum, already on the sidelines, has found an unnecessary way to land himself in the headlines, too, on Sunday confirming reports his left knee began swelling after he went bowling on Nov. 10. ... A prominent, highly respected orthopedic surgeon who is not involved in Bynum's treatment and has not seen his MRIs, told The News Journal that Bynum has likely been diagnosed with osteochondral lesions. The condition may heal on its own, but will likely keep Bynum from practicing until March or April, at the earliest. If it doesn't heal, Bynum will require surgery that could sideline him for up to a year. He should find out if he needs surgery by as early as December, the surgeon said. Courier-Post |
