Giants ^Update: Victor Cruz won’t rule out a holdout

John Mara: Cruz asking for too much money right now

Posted by Josh Alper on February 1, 2013, 2:16 PM EST

Earlier this week, Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz said he isn’t getting antsy about the fact that he and the Giants have failed to come to terms on a long-term contract.

Giants owner John Mara discussed the topic on Friday and shed some light as to why the two sides haven’t been able to come to an agreement. Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Mara said Cruz is asking for too much money “right now” and that “there’s a limit” to how much the Giants are willing to pay in order to reach an agreement. Mara went on to say that getting a deal done with Cruz “is a high priority, but he’s not our only priority.”

A couple of teams that are looking for receivers are going to have quite a bit of cap space.

One such team rhymes with Feeb-land Clowns.

Wild prediction: Cruz demands too much money, Giants fool around with him in the negotiations. Meanwhile, Welker and the Patriots can't come to an agreeable figure. Out of nowhere, the Patriots agree to a deal with Cruz and let Welker step.

That's the other thing that will hurt Cruz getting the monies he wants...

Greg Jennings
Dwayne Bowe
Wes Welker
Mike Wallace
Danny Amendola

All free agents.

Btw, Pats end up with Amendola.

Before Amendola's year for of injuries, I would have agreed. I still think I might. Less so, though. The guy is hurt 85% of the time.

Cruz is not going anywhere. as a restricted free agent, the giants will tender him, and if a team signs him they will give the Giants their upcoming 1st round pick. Cruz can also be franchise tagged, and he is not an unrestricted free agent until 2015.
