NFL Sources: NFL pushing for changes to offseason; wants free agency, draft moved

By Adam Schefter | ESPN

The NFL is proposing an overhaul to its offseason calendar, pushing back the combine to early March, the start of free agency to early April and the draft to early May, according to league sources.

The plan must be approved by the NFL Players Association, but the league already is pushing it aggressively, meeting on the issue most recently -- but not exclusively -- Thursday night in Indianapolis, where the NFL scouting combine is being held.

Under the proposal, all NFL teams also would kick off training camp on the same summer day, making it the official launch of the football season.

The idea is to lengthen the NFL offseason and make sure football is relevant during a longer offseason period with one big event in each month. It also would create a new revenue stream for the NFL, with each event producing added money for the league.

The NFL also wants to expand regional combines as a feeder competition for spots at the official combine in Indianapolis.

Surely they're joking. I mean the draft in April is perfect. It starts the hype and allows the teams more time to sign their guys. This is a bad move and I doubt the PA will go with it. At least, I hope they don't...I want as much NFL as I can get all throughout the year.

I could see why the player's association would be ok with it. It would push back the time Free Agents have to be thinking about work, giving them essentially more time off between the end of the season and being in contact with teams. It won't effect most players on any given year much, as far as I can tell, so they probably won't care and will agree.

they will have a problem with it, when it compresses OTA's and Mini Camps into a shorter time frame, and then followed up with Training Camp. The already complain about camp being to long, with a shorter break between all the pre camp stuff, they will bitch even more.
